Eating Our Way Through Rome: Cal's Corner Pub & Grille

When we walked into Cal’s for the first time, everyone at the bar, sitting shoulder to shoulder, turned to see who had just come in. Not because they were nosy, or bored with whatever conversation they were having, but because they were looking to welcome whoever it was. 

After exchanging smiles, we found the perfect high-top table. Almost immediately, we were greeted by a cheerful host who, as it turned out, was one of the owners. Michelle Schneider and her husband Kent opened Cal’s Corner Pub & Grille in June of 2021, and almost overnight it became a locals’ favorite. 

Cal’s, formerly Friar Tucks, is your quintessential Wisconsin gathering place that serves up cold beer, a juicy burger, and a friendly “everybody’s family” environment. With a complete menu of must haves like cheese curds and chicken wings, to the well-dressed burgers, sandwiches, salads, and wraps, there truly is something for everyone.

And then there are the daily specials - Tuesdays feature $2 tacos, domestic taps, and well drinks. Wednesdays they serve what may be one of their most popular choices, broasted chicken with all the sides. 

We were lucky enough to visit on a Thursday and were thrilled to find out it was ribeye steak night. With a steak so big it was literally hanging over the edges of the plate. Tender, flavorful, juicy, and cooked to perfection, and so much better than you’ll ever get at home - including the price! 

But it wouldn’t be a Wisconsin pub and grill without a Friday fish fry and a Saturday prime rib special, and Cal’s, of course, has both. 

No matter when you visit, be sure to leave room for dessert. In fact, maybe order it first, because it’d be a shame if you left without trying the sweet and tart Key Lime pie.
