Eating Our Way Through Rome: Lake Sherwood Lodge
It took a half second for our eyes to adjust. Not because it was especially dark inside, but because it was one of those perfect days where the sky is bluer than blue, and the sun is so bright that sunglasses really aren't doing what sunglasses are supposed to do. And as a bonus, the temp was somewhere around 75 degrees with no humidity.
In other words, a perfect day to walk past the bar and head straight for the outdoor deck to claim one of the coveted lakeside tables as our own.
After taking in the spectacular view of Lake Sherwood just beyond a majestic old cottonwood tree, we were greeted by Krista. On most days you’ll find Krista behind the bar, but today we were lucky enough to have her take care of us outside on the deck. Maybe she too couldn’t pass up such a beautiful day.
Krista started us off with spicy Bloody Marys crowned with the perfect combination of garnishes, and Miller Lite chasers which, as every Wisconsinite knows, is the only way to enjoy a Bloody. Next up was a soft pretzel as big as the steering wheel in a truck. Dipped in creamy, melted cheese sauce, most people would call it dinner.
But not us. We were there on a mission. We had been hearing about their Reuben sandwich being one of the best anywhere. And we were thinking, how could any Reuben be better than any other Reuben. After all, they’re all made with the same five ingredients, aren’t they? But, somehow, it was indeed better. It was incredible.
But looking around to see what everybody else was eating, as one might do, we realized we needed to come back, because the Sherwood Burger looked incredible too. As did the crispy chicken sandwich. And the pizza. And the…
