Wisconsin Par 3 Championship at Sand Valley Golf Resort
How cool would it be if the state’s top amateur golfers competed in a tournament in which a hole-in-one was possible by every player on every tee shot?
It’s about to happen. The Wisconsin State Golf Association is launching the inaugural Wisconsin State Par-3 Championship this summer. The one-round event with a field of 72 will be held July 30 at the Sandbox, a new par-3 course at Sand Valley Resort in the Town of Rome.
Entrants must have a handicap index not exceeding 9.4, not coincidentally the requirement for the State Amateur. With some of Wisconsin’s top players teeing it up on holes that range from 51 to 149 yards, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a few “1s” on scorecards.
“The plan is for this event to be successful and grow,” WSGA executive director Rob Jansen said. “We hope the word spreads and people get excited about it.”
Eventually, the tournament could include women, juniors and seniors, all playing from the same set of tees. Perhaps the United States Golf Association will take notice. How much fun would it be if Jordan Spieth, Lexi Thompson and Fred Couples comprised the final threesome at a national par-3 championship?
