Cabincore. Simple as That.
It’s not really a new concept, but in this crazy, hectic world that we live in, the idea of “getting away from it all” is therapy we can all use. Sometimes we need to be reminded to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the simplicity of someplace that’s a million miles from reality.
No it’s not new, but like all things in this era of TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, living a simpler life has a name, a definition, and a following which, ironically, flies in the face of the very thing it’s trying to be.
We’re talking about cabincore - an aesthetic that celebrates the simplicity of cabin life and all that comes with it. Trading in crazy for cozy, if you will.
Say goodbye, at least for a while, to the city or the burbs, and make your way to a homey A-frame or a rustic log home - you know, like the ones in the movies - at the lake, in the woods, or on the open fields of a rural countryside.
Leave behind your Zoom calls and shopping malls and just imagine the rustic natural materials, earthy colors, and cozy furnishings - the overstuffed pillows, stone fireplace, built-in bookshelves, and the warm wooden accents. Imagine yourself reading a good book with nothing but the song of birds and the smell of fresh autumn air wafting in through the open window.
Some people are lucky enough to embrace cabincore as a big part of their lives - either full time or in a second home getaway. They were a little quicker than the rest of us to realize that simple pleasures are the best. But for those of us a little slower on the uptake, here’s the good news; websites like Airbnb, VRBO, and Travel Wisconsin make cabincore no longer a mere concept, but a reality well within our reach.

Looking for something small and quaint? It’s here. Like a newly renovated cabin located on Lake Sherwood. Or a quirky geodesic dome on Lake Camelot. Or how about a beautiful and spacious log home overlooking the rolling sand dunes unique to the area, big enough for the whole gang.
There are literally dozens to choose from. Each one better than the last. Each one the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
But remember, cabincore is more than curling up with that book. It’s everything that surrounds cabin life as a way of life - especially in a nature-centric place like Rome. Especially now, with summer making way for cooler weather and all the activities Rome has to offer.
As we watch the boats and piers coming out of the water destined for winter storage, and skiing, tubing, and boating have had their time in the sun, cabincore still allows for some peaceful, personal time on the many lakes in Rome.
Skim the early morning calm in a kayak, canoe, or paddle board. Or float along with a line in the water with nothing but the rising mist and the prehistoric sounds of sandhill cranes as they prepare for their southbound journey.
Later in the day, there’s still time for hiking or biking on the many miles of trails running in and out of the woods of Rome. What a perfect way to enjoy the changing colors of the maple, oak, and birch trees before the leaves begin to fall. Or better yet, since no one will be judging, put on your favorite old sweatshirt, and catch a few Z’s in the hammock hanging invitingly between two majestic pines.
Soon, and with great anticipation, you’ll be swapping out that sweatshirt for more and more layers, and that’s perfectly fine. Because as the snow begins to fly, and there’s nothing but the sound of silence all around, wintertime cabincore dares you to feel stress of any kind.
In fact, this seems like the perfect time to grab that book, wrap yourself in a thick, warm blanket by the fireplace, cradled by those overstuffed pillows, and read, read, read until you doze off with a big ol’ smile on your face.
Because again, no one will be judging.
